Lazarus, Split on City Public Power Propositions
The race to establish public power in San Francisco, via Proposition
F and Measure I, was close in many respects, with voter turnout so low
that the results could easily have gone the other way if more people
voted in the Nov. 6 election.

Last January, when Arnold Palmer walked away from a deal to turn Harding
Park into a PGA-style golf course, SF Mayor Willie Brown and other supporters
of the concept had to scramble to come up with a way to sell the idea
to a reluctant public.

With rain pounding the pavement and winds gusting through the trees,
a small but enthusiastic group of residents showed up at the Nov. 28
San Francisco Police Commission meeting, held at the Taraval Police
Station, to bid farewell to the popular commanding officer, Capt. Michael
Yalon.

Two high school programs for wayward teens are planning to open at the
site of the Principal's Center, located at 43rd Avenue and Judah Street.
Croquet Is a Game That Has
Been Played for 700 Years
Members of the San Francisco Croquet Club (SFCC) have been "roqueting"
and "stalking the ball" in crisp white outfits every Sunday and Tuesday
for the past 20 years. Founded in 1981 on a golf putting green on Sloat
Boulevard, by Steve Swig of the Fairmont Hotel family, among others.
It moved later to the northeast corner of Stern Grove.
